Intent At Alvaston Junior Academy, our intent for Maths is to deliver a curriculum that inspires and nurtures a love for the subject, equipping children with the skills and knowledge needed to confidently apply Maths in real-life situations. Our Mathematics curriculum aims to instil curiosity, deepen knowledge, and provide opportunities for problem-solving, reasoning, and real-life application.

Implementation

Our implementation strategy focuses on creating an environment that fosters a love for Maths and where children feel confident to engage, explore and deepen their learning. Our curriculum is structured around the National Curriculum, and we enhance it by providing opportunities for cross-curricular links, practical tasks, and investigations. We aim to provide children with a deep and broad subject knowledge base that is rooted in the development of mathematical concepts and fluency.

We believe that every child, regardless of their starting point, can achieve great things in Math, and so we provide differentiated learning opportunities and a comprehensive support structure to ensure all our students achieve their potential. Our teachers use high-quality teaching and learning strategies that incorporate problem-solving and reasoning, encouraging critical thinking, creativity and independent learning. Our use of technology and specialist resources supporting teaching and learning aims to enhance the delivery of Maths lessons.

Impact Our approach aims to ensure children develop a deep understanding of mathematical concepts and skills, with the ability to apply them confidently to real-life situations. We aim to motivate children in Maths and build their self-confidence through a growth mindset approach. This approach leads to improved results, with our students exceeding national expectations in Maths at both Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2.
